manifesta 9


From September 2011 to October 2012 Thomas Engelbert collaborated as project coordinator for The Deep of the Modern, 9th Edition of Manifesta, the European Biennial of Contemporary Art in Genk, Region of Limburg, Belgium. The Deep of the Modern is curated by the mexican critic, historian and curator Cuauthémoc Medina in collaborations with co-curators Katerina Gregos and Dawn Ades and takes place in the main building of the old Waterschei mine complex. Mainly responsible for the production of the contemporary section he works on the development of more than 40 contemporary projects and exposits with artists from all over the world, and also on the production of 6 installations attributed to Manifestas historical section,  namely Duchamp, Long, David Hammons, Vennet, Boltanski and Broadthaers.

Carlos Amorales´s coal drawing machine generates drawings  based on symbols from the book of GoetiaDue to the continuous interaction with the daemonic powers the machine is especially maintenance intensive.
